Spending Time – Willfully or Wastefully?

The saying that time and tide wait for none is not without reason. Slipping away faster than you can think, time is one of the most precious commodities we live with. Time wasted, is time lost forever as that precise moment never comes back. Irrespective of our social or economic status, all of us have just 24 hours a day and all efforts must be made to ensure that every moment is spent fruitfully.

Most of us spend most of our waking (even dreaming) hours whiling away time thinking of how to make more money or how to improve the quality of life, little realizing that time is simply whizzing past and we have not used the time to live life fully. There is hardly anything which money cannot buy, but time is priceless, no one can buy time.

Are we truly aware how we are spending time? Are we simply wasting it or ‘investing’ it? Perhaps no other word describes spending quality time better than the word ‘investing’. Investing time fruitfully is a means of investing on our lives and on ourselves.

There are so many instances where we simply waste time by sitting in front of the ‘idiot box’ or surfing the net looking for something we are not too sure of. Some of us even try to buy time by cutting short their helpful sleeping hours. If you wake up early to have some more coffee and smoke a few more cigarettes, does not mean that you are spending quality time in your life. Working late in office could mean that perhaps you are handling your work inefficiently. You could perhaps be a time manager. Your life is controlled by someone else in these cases.

Very often you will hear people complaining that ‘I wish the day had more than 24 hours’ or ‘I wish every day was a Friday’. These are the people who cannot manage their own time efficiently and wasting their time. If you can organize your work for the day efficiently and focus on the work which keeps you motivated and you enjoy, they you will hardly feel tired or worn out at the end of the day.

Next time you think that you are spending time not willfully but wastefully, think of the old Roman saying, which said “Carpe Diem” meaning “live the day’ or better put ‘organize the day’. This is a concept which holds great significance in our daily life. sit back and analyze the time you spend simply whiling or investing in something which you enjoy and will give you benefits. All our tomorrows are uncertain. So, while you are spending your time today, think “Carpe Diem”.
