Tired of Being a Fat Slob

Tired of being a fat slob.

BTW – that’s an OLD photo – When I was at least 50 lbs more than I am today – it’s a reminder photos I’m sharing but more importantly, WARNING myself with. I’ll never get to that point again…

OK I’m not going to kick myself too much like that – I’ve been actually doing great with fitness and weight loss or more weight management overall.

Last year I lost over 50 lbs by tweeting every meal for over a year – it was a fun experiment, included photos, and connected with a lot of people. The social media aspect held me accountable, and allowed others to comment on, join me for, or recommend suggestions on meals.

Mostly I did a low carb diet to get through most all of my weight loss. I then took a break to cheat and figure out the next plan – well, I never really gained. I stayed extremely active and was so AWARE of my body more that I never really jumped over 200 lbs. Well, until now.

I’ve allowed things to slip so I have the choice of working out more or eating less – or both. I’ve already used this opportunity of awareness to focus more on my health and also will be doing a detox program too – I’ll log those details on DetoxFiber.com.

And I’m just a few pounds over the 200 mark – but the awareness, even just mentioning it here really makes me focus on keeping things under control.

On that note – off to dinner :)

  • Darren,
I'm here to support you all the way, but please, keep the detox details to yourself. LOL

Here's an idea to monetize your weight loss-- get a bunch of folks to do it with you and have a weekly group support meeting (private for members only) using your Rondee line and also do a weekly Tweet support party.

Just a thought -- but no matter what you do... good luck!
  • Darren ...

Saw you chatting with @rickgriffin (my co-host on @midliferoadtrip ) on Twitter a came over to see your blog. I am fascinated that you were able to lose 50lbs by tracking and Tweeting every meal. To say I am inspired is an understatement. It's just the kick in the rump I needed! I'm to unorganized/lazy/intimidated to keep a hand written food journal yet Tweeting about it seems fun and manageable. I want to lose about 20-25 lbs ...

It's nice to virtually meet you and I look forward to following your food journal! Sandi
  • Sandi,

Great to finally "meet" you - OMG @RickGriffin is awesome and a very cool online and offline friend - WOW good people. OK back to weight loss - my story started when a friend, Julie (beautiful woman who discovered her smaller self) told me of some incredible tales and techniques, describing "logging every meal" as the worst thing she ever tried. That *moment* I decided it would be fun to tweet every meal - complete with photos.

By sharing *everything*, this meant the late night pringles or endless snickers while working on a project, etc. Some Twitter friends (well, not Rick - he amuses me with video talking tomatoes - scared me from veggies - kidding) would actually comment, criticize, or complement - I even would get recipes, etc.

Before foursquare even was heard of, I was broadcasting most every meal on Brightkite http://brightkite.com/people/williger and sharing particulars of everything eaten on FoodFeed.US (a Twitter based food logging tool - yes it existed, helped me tremendously - then disappeared).

The awareness to me of logging everything for a full year was a gift in itself - I saw trends and behaviors, but more importantly I was able to connect with others. The weight almost lost itself, the friends gained was incredible! It's almost unheard of for me to join anyone for a meal without camera phones tweeting or facebooking the particulars.

Let me know how you start leveraging food logging - for fun or for weight loss / management - I think when it's combined and the accountable honesty of community awareness kicks in, it's often a good thing!

    Foodie photographers - UNITE!

  • Thank you Darren for your honesty and generosity! I began this morning right after I read your post ... I think I am going to record using posterous ... It's simple, easy.. I used it for Ricks Alaska trip and loved it. I have to go weigh myself .. God the dreaded scale ... I have been avoiding it for so long! I look forward to "weighing in" with you and sharing the details of my Road Trip to becoming more fit.. Thanks again for the inspiration!
